April’s passion for helping others navigate local issues and public policy stems from her own experience as a parent.

After spending a decade working at Unum, April’s life changed when her youngest child was diagnosed with autism. She experienced the confusion of navigating services for her child, so she left the business world to go back to school for early childhood special education, and then worked as an education and social services professional for almost ten years. In that role, her first-hand experience as a parent helped her guide other parents in finding the best solutions for their children.

A 18-year resident of East Deering, April has seen Portland grow into a diverse and culturally rich community. But for all the growth, there are still many areas where the city is not meeting the needs of all residents.

April is a member of the Dine’ (Navajo) Nation and has been an advocate for indigenous rights throughout her adult life. She co-founded the first all-Indigenous roller derby team, comprising more than 20 tribal nations. She has worked internationally to support diversity, equity and inclusion in sports. She currently helps train Native candidates and elected officials from around the country.
